Meet Richard Potter
Senior Associate
Richard Potter is an accomplished litigator with nearly two decades of experience across a broad spectrum of civil and commercial disputes. He has appeared in the District Court and High Court on both first instance matters and appeals, and is well-versed in alternative dispute resolution processes, including mediation.
Richard has particular expertise in construction-related litigation. He regularly advises on disputes arising from active construction projects, payment claims and schedules under the Construction Contracts Act 2002, and post-completion defect claims. His work spans issues involving builders, architects, engineers, developers, and territorial authorities—bringing clarity and strategic insight to complex, multi-party disputes.
After launching his career in Auckland, Richard broadened his horizons with roles in London and Hamilton before returning to Auckland in 2023. He joined Russell van Hout for its direct, commercially focused approach and collaborative ethos, and now works closely with clients to deliver practical, outcome-driven advice.
Outside of work, Richard is an avid traveller with a taste for adventure. His journeys have included back-country skiing in Japan and camping under the stars in the Moroccan desert—experiences that reflect his curiosity, resilience, and love of the unexpected.
