Meet Scott Russell

Director

Scott has a wealth of knowledge acquired over the last 20 years working in dispute resolution.

He started his career at Bell Gully where his first job was working on the longest running construction litigation case in New Zealand—CHH v Rolls Royce & Genesis. He was in court for almost 200 days, which either scarred him for life or grew his love of construction law (or maybe a bit of both).

He then moved to Hong Kong to work for Ashurst, before moving to London to work for international corporate Virgin Media as their head of litigation.  He returned home to NZ in 2015 to work for the Commerce Commission before founding Russell Legal in 2018 with a focus on providing direct, pragmatic and commercial legal advice.

Over this time, Scott has demonstrated a history of success in both the private and public sector resolving complex commercial disputes for national and international clients.  He has also built a specialist knowledge in the area of construction.  He is comfortable in all dispute forums, including adjudication, arbitration, mediation and litigation.

Scott has completed an MBA at Auckland University and looks at disputes through a very commercial lens.  He provides practical and commercial advice to allow clients to make good decisions built on strong legal foundations.  Clients appreciate Scott’s laser like focus on efficiently and effectively achieving their goals.

Scott has strong international networks having attended the University of California and worked in Hong Kong and London.

Outside of work, Scott enjoys traveling slowly, over long distances, in the least sensible way possible. This has included driving a 7 horsepower moto-rickshaw 3,000km across north India, mountain biking the Camino De Santiago 800 kms across France and Spain, taking local buses the 10,000km length of South America, and a truck tour 6,000km from Cape Town to Kenya.
